Unfolding Impressions of Identity and Gender
By
Sok Song

This collagraph monoprint series, created with graphite transfer paper, explores my childhood and current identity through intricate folds of traditional textiles, a technique inspired by my lifelong origami practice. Drawing upon my unique journey as a gay, first-generation Korean immigrant growing up in American military towns, these prints reflect the interplay of race, sex, and gender, as well as the contrasting influences of toxic masculinity and devout religiosity that surface in Korean-American culture.
